The Foundation Course for Business, Education, Entertainment and
Science in the 21st Century!
This is an online course with all course activities
taking place on the Internet.
This course introduces the Internet and its effects on modern society.
Students will review its history, concepts, and terminology; and learn how to connect to and navigate the Internet. Emphasis will be on using the Internet to access and provide information on a world-wide network. The course covers the basic concepts of
networking, protocols, security and communication terminology pertaining to the Internet. A variety of Internet resources will be demonstrated and subsequently explored by students.

Additional
Goals
These goals
are not part of the course requirements but are included in the online
version of this course. You will be exposed to extensive technical
information about the TCP/IP protocol and the development of services on
the Internet. This is designed to give ICS majors, Digital Media and
E-Commerce students the expanded foundation they need to pursue careers
directly involved in the Internet medium.
Schedule
This is an online three
semester hour course offered through Leeward Community College. It has no
required face to face meetings and is offered state wide with registration
possible at any University of Hawaii Community College campus.
Hardware and software required
Preferred hardware is Pentium MMX II
or III based with at least 64+ MB of RAM, Netscape Communicator or Explorer
5.0 including RealAudio 8 and high speed Internet access via Road Runner, ISDN or 56K modem. You will need
at least a multimedia PC with a current RealAudio (G2) player and at least 28.8 mbps modem with Netscape or Explorer in its most recent form. Macs need to be similarly equipped. Everything is based in the
Webct Virtual Classroom and is handled by your browser. You will also need
MSN Messenger installed for impromptu conferences and informal class
communication. Detailed
information on applications needed, where to go, and what to do will be
given at the start of the class. |
